Uno dei problemi principali nel gioco del texas hold’em poker, è come saper valutare le carte che si hanno in mano all’inizio del gioco. Il problema è da misurare sia in termini di quali carte si hanno in mano, sia in termini di posizione di gioco al tavolo di texas poker. Come è noto, se si è in late position si avrà un ventaglio di carte più ampio da giocare che essendo ‘under the gun’ ovvero in posizione di early position: i primi che parlano e svelano il proprio gioco.
Per riuscire a valutare nel modo corretto le carte all’inzio del gioco, insomma le starting cards, un giocatore di fama mondiale e autore di libri di gioco sul poker, David Sklansky, ci ha dato una notevole mano. Grazie alla sua esperienza di gioco nel texas hold’em poker e anche a preziosi calcoli statistico-matematici e studi sull’argomento, David Sklansky è giunto a disegnare una serie di gruppi di carte, a seconda del loro valore di gioco. Sono le seguenti:

Gruppo 2: TT, AQs, AJs, KQs, AK
Gruppo 3: 99, JTs, QJs, KJs, ATs, AQ
Gruppo 4: T9s, KQ, 88, QTs, 98s, J9s, AJ, KTs
Gruppo 5: 77, 87s, Q9s, T8s, KJ, QJ, JT, 76s, 97s, Axs, 65s
Gruppo 6: 66, AT, 55, 86s, KT, QT, 54s, K9s, J8s, 75s
Gruppo 7: 44, J9, 64s, T9, 53s, 33, 98, 43s, 22, Kxs, T7s, Q8s
Gruppo 8: 87, A9, Q9, 76, 42s, 32s, 96s, 85s, J8, J7s, 65, 54, 74s, K9, T8, 43
Nella tabella sopra, ‘s’ sta per suited, ovvero carte dello stesso seme. E’ un’indicazione, naturalmente, ma i consigli sono di giocare nelle prime posizioni solo mani dei primi quattro gruppi, nelle posizioni centrali invece i gruppi cinque e sei e nelle ultime posizioni i gruppi sette e otto.
David Sklansky è stato uno dei giocatori più noti degli anni degli anni ottanta, avendo vinto ben due braccialetti del World Poker Tour. Ma soprattutto la sua fama si è consolidata anche grazie a numerosi libri che ha scritto sulla teoria e pratica del texas hold’em poker.
