Come è nato il tuo interesse alla magia?
Verso i 19 anni, ero in un ristorante e un cameriere faceva un gioco di prestigio. Mi fece scegliere una carta e successivamente me la estrasse dal mazzo col classico prestigio di magia. Rimasi sbalordito, totalmente ipnotizzato. Non avevo idea di come l’avesse potuto fare . In seguito andai in un negozio di magia e il negoziante mi disse – ma puoi farlo anche tu, sai? -. Da quel momento mi immersi nella magia, praticandola fino a 12 ore al giorno.
Per quanto hai vissuto di magia?
Ho lavorato come mago professionista dai 19 ai 21 anni. Non fu male, mi contattavano imprese per animare feste, lavoravo nei ristoranti.
Come ti sei avvicinato al poker?
Per puro caso, verso i 22 un mio compagno di stanza mi disse che dovevo assolutamente imparare e mi diede un libro sul poker. Ne rimasi folgorato, come in Matrix, ero convintò di aver visto la luce. Lo raccontai alla mia ragazza, si mise a ridere!
Cos’è stato più difficile per te nel poker alla texana?
Avere disciplina. Andavo in tilt, oppure passavo giorni a giocare senza mai smettere. Non sapevo regolarmi. Un giorno lavoravo come mago e cameriere e mi feci due giorni interi consecutivi di lavoro e gioco al poker dalla sera al giorno dopo, quando dovevo ritornare al lavoro. Un incubo.
Dopo le World Series of Poker 2001 eri in completa bancarotta. Senza un cent. Pensasti che fosse la fine della tua carriera?
No sapevo che i soldi vanno e vengono. Appena prima ero sopra di 20mila. Dopo, son stato cinque mesi senza un cent. Facevo di tutto, cameriere, puliscipiatti, e alla fine tiravo il mese.
Come hai ricostruito il tuo patrimonio?
Avevo un amico, molto amico, ma anche molto ‘scemo’. Avevo solo 1000 dollari netti e a mo di schermo mi sfidò in un heads-up. Mi dissi, ho appena perso tutto, che cambia? Giocai e li vinsi. Li volle rigiocare, ma questa volta 2000. E vinsi anche quelli. Il giorno dopo, ne volle giocare ancora, fino a che ne vinsi un totale di 14000. In realtá ne vinsi di più ma mi accontentai di quello che mi diede entro una settimana. Con quei 14mila dollari, ritornai nel giro.
Che consiglio daresti ai nuovi giocatori?
Quello di giocare seriamente dandosi una disciplina. Moltissimi giocatori sanno che potrebbero giocare meglio, ma non ci lavorano su. Non dedicano del tempo a migliorarsi, anche se e’ noioso e sembra poco importante, è di fondamentale importanza, invece.
